The one-sentence summary of the album, then, is that of course it’s bad, because Gillette is bad, and the context he’s in is third-rate, underproduced glam metal anyway, albeit with the significant window-dressing of Batio’s prodigious shredding. referencing Proud To Be Loud!, LP, LOPL 503 This edition includes a printed inner sleeve with lyrics and photos / crossword logo. Some people may be put off by it, because of Gillette’s over the top vocals. The former’s echo-laden chorus is one of the dumbest things ever put to tape. You’re fair to wonder that, but the answer is that, given that Nitro is a musical punchline, Proud To Be Loud doesn’t really need to be compared to most music. ! The voice just handles single notes or short phrases a lot better, which allows the singer to show off the upper range with sufficient power to push the music to a climax. A few songs are beyond saving with even those fixes, but I guess they would also move out of the realm of all-time awful into that of generic glam filler. JOIN US!! Beyond Gillette’s less mature voice, there’s the matter of some pretty amateur production here, where the vocals are laid way out front and harmonized (though a bit less over-harmonized than later Nitro work) and the drums and guitar solos get a fair amount of space as well. At its worst, this album is more unlistenable than anything on O.F.R. \r\rI live it, I breathe it, I gotta have more. \rAnd I've always been the one who practiced what I preached. proud to be loud. If guitar shredding is not your thing, this album is not for you. JOIN US!! The weird thing about Proud To Be Loud, though, is that the rest of the songs actually show varying amounts of potential. At 19, this makes sense—when I was 19, I discovered I could do a half-decent rendition of a bunch of high-pitched things in the “Painkiller” mold, and thus naturally assumed I had some sort of rare wide range. Given what Nitro turned out to be, this is what one would expect, which may make you wonder why I’m being so long-winded at getting to such an obvious point some thirty years after the damn thing was released. Gillette gets in a big scream after the solo that actually works very well—if he just focused on that sort of approach to high singing, again, everything he sang would’ve just ended up so much better. 10 tracks (47:29). It’s important to remember that Gillette was quite young for all of this—19 or 20 here, still in his early 20s in Nitro—so his lack of depth can somewhat be excused (one cannot make the same allowance for Batio, 11 years his senior). By the time he was in Nitro, he had at least cleaned this part up a bit, but there’s very little vocal quality control on Proud To Be Loud, making the whole thing sound frequently amateurish. The oldskool gangsters movement! 2. 475 likes. The title track starts out with a standard 80s rock ballad feel but then transitions surprisingly well into a stomping chorus, also making ample room for some legitimately melodic shredding for Batio, whose lead tone is the one well-produced thing here. That’s all I got to say about the drumming. Batio really showcases his guitar abilities on the song Nitro (Guitar Solo). The two absolute worst songs on here, though, are “Red Hot Rocket Ride” and “Mirror Mirror.” Both start out with the terrible low vocals but can barely last two lines before arbitrary two-octave jumps (avoiding that midrange, see?) One look at the song titles on Proud To Be Loud--“Red Hot Rocket Ride,” “Make Me Crazy,” “Bitch On My Back,” heck, the album title itself—to know that Gillette is no visionary. The two best songs off this album are When The Clock Strikes 12 and Head On. 3) As the first issue exemplifies, Gillette doesn’t really have a sense of what he can and can’t do. Like Batio, he knew no restraint and rarely had any sort of good musical idea, but unlike Batio, he didn’t even execute his ideas well. Even with all the issues this album displays, then, it is still far superior musically to Nitro because a lot of the songs have solid (if hard to execute) ideas and Batio’s guitar pyrotechnics actually improve about half of this stuff rather than just further sinking everything. Anyway, anyone masochistic enough to have more than a rudimentary, two-minute YouTube-based familiarity with O.F.R. I think these were recorded in 2003. Most of the biggest offenders here (or highlights if worse is better) are on side 2. While Gillette can do this too, he instead opts to sing extended portions of songs up there, which results in something that sounds a lot like the Bee Gees trying to sing “Painkiller.” It sounds oddly forced and gravelly, like Steve Harwell from Smash Mouth trying to do a bad Zakk Wylde impression. As a punchline, of course, these positives become negatives, so perhaps that leaves Proud To Be Loud in no-man’s land—it’s not good enough to be good glam metal, but it’s not bad enough to stand out as the single greatest point-and-laugh monument to the genre’s failings. Proud to Be Loud, an Album by Jim Gillette. He has nothing great to offer, unfortunately. On the other hand, they might have become so accustomed to a certain sound level that they don’t experience it as loud anymore. Now, as tasteless as Batio’s playing is on the Nitro stuff—utterly generic 80’s riffage punctuated by sudden bursts into gratuitous and directionless flurries of (admittedly expertly played) lead work—it is Gillette who was the clear biggest issue with Nitro. Batio really goes wild on Flash of Lightning, Red Hot Rocket Ride and Show Down. 3.8 out of 5 stars 3 ratings. Yes, Proud to be Loud is good! There’s nothing noteworthy about them at all. 117 likes. Overall, what we have here is a set of songs that would actually acquit themselves reasonably well if they had a top-flight power metal-type singer in the Ralf Scheepers mold, a drummer who actually threw in some complexity every now and then, and reasonably balanced production. Find album reviews, stream songs, credits and award information for Proud to Be Loud - Michael Katon on AllMusic - 1988 “Flash of Lightning” also has good ideas, but Gillette’s third-rate Jeff Martin impression really sinks it—you’ll also hear a nod to “Freight Train” in the solo. The bonus tracks on this album are garbage. Mind you, none of them actually make it through completely unscathed to actually being good songs, but for a lot of the album, you could squint and almost see an alternate-reality version of Nitro succeeding this and actually turning out to be kind of fun.
